Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
