Approximately 50 cars have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers state they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they added.
Officers then found many other marked vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state preliminary tests show the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; investigators are not yet informed of any physical harm in association with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities stated they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.
An important political figure stated the incident left him speechless and had to be solved promptly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine people by a assailant aiming at people of migrant background in February 2020.
