A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested pending a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
